Julie Gruber is an experienced global Fortune 200 C-suite Executive with extensive boardroom exposure and experience. Julie reports directly to Gap Inc.’s CEO, is a critical member of the executive leadership team, and has provided strategic guidance and stability across multiple CEO transitions. Throughout her career, she has been integral to driving transformation, accelerating growth, managing crisis, leading both acquisitions and divestitures, all in a disrupted retail environment.
Julie has led Government Affairs, Sustainability/ESG, Real Estate, Gap Foundation, Employee Relations, Asset Protection, and Business Continuity, in addition to all aspects of Legal and Compliance. She has also overseen Human Resources and Communications. She has led teams across the globe, including China, Japan, Mexico, and the UK, and works closely on global supply chain matters. This breadth of experience has given Julie the opportunity to impact all aspects of the company’s operations, including retail, supply chain, digital, and international.
Julie plays an integral role in Risk Management at Gap Inc. She co-founded the company’s Risk Committee, chairs the Integrity and Corporate Crisis teams, and established Gap Inc.’s Cyber Security and Privacy Council. Julie has significant experience across branding, intellectual property, licensing, and franchising and played a critical role in each of Gap Inc.’s acquisitions and other major strategic transactions.
Julie has extensive boardroom and governance experience. She is a trusted advisor to the board and works closely with the Board Chair, CEO, and Committee Chairs on a wide range of issues, including strategy development, CEO succession, executive and director compensation and recruiting, ESG matters, and investor relations. Julie also partners closely with Internal Audit and the board of directors’ Audit & Finance committee on a variety of matters, including anti-corruption, ethics, privacy, and cyber security.
Julie has a passion, drive, and commitment for creating opportunities for underrepresented groups, both inside the legal profession and beyond. She plays an integral role in the work to diversify Gap’s board, which is nearly half women, and served on Gap Inc.’s Diversity and Inclusion Council for many years.
At Komen, Julie is part of the board overseeing the integration of Komen affiliates and the launch of Komen’s Big Data for Breast Cancer initiative.
In her board work at LifeMoves, Julie was integral in the organization’s major rebranding and its ongoing expansion efforts to serve a growing number of residents.
Julie graduated from Yale College (B.A.) and earned her JD at the University of California, College of Law, San Francisco (formerly Hastings). She had the honor of clerking for the Honorable Ronald M. Whyte in the Federal District Court in San Jose.
