Accomplished financial services executive with C-suite experience for Huntington Bancshares (NASDAQ: HBAN), a $194B asset regional bank holding company with a $20B Market Cap. Speyer is a strategic business leader with experience in the financial service industry, regulatory affairs, and community development, with a proven record of profitable growth during diverse economic cycles. She has executive, governance and risk management experience in both banking and board service.
Sharon retired from Huntington in December 2023. In July of 2024, Sharon joined the University of Toledo’s senior leadership team as the Strategic Advisor to the Interim President, leveraging her experience in banking, strategic community initiatives and higher education.
During her 31-year career, she served in a range of capacities. Sharon was Regional President for the Northwest Ohio Region of Huntington after joining Huntington in 2007 after its acquisition of Sky Bank with direct P/L responsibilities for all revenue segments. Under her leadership, the region held lead market share in both lending and deposit growth for 15 years. She has demonstrated the ability to lead through crisis management, organizational transition including post-acquisition integration, restructuring and economic uncertainty. Sharon began her banking career as General Counsel and Secretary of the Board for a predecessor community bank.
In 2016, Huntington’s CEO selected her to serve in an expanded newly created position – Director of Economic Inclusion. As part of its mergers and acquisition strategy, Huntington entered into three Community Benefits agreement – 2021 ($40B), 2020 ($20B) and 2016 ($16B) which were comprehensive stakeholder informed commitments to drive direct lending and investment impact in low income and majority/minority communities. As co-sponsor of these agreements, Speyer was accountable for the creation, execution and oversight of Huntington’s Bank charitable giving, outreach, volunteerism, and economic development initiatives in Huntington’s 11 state footprint. In this capacity, she served as strategic advisor to the CEO, Executive Leadership Team and HBI Board deploying a pragmatic solutions-based approach. In 2021, the American Bankers Association recognized her for leading Huntington’s pandemic relief efforts for community partners. Key highlights include:
- Risk Management: Responsible for development of corporate program which meet commitments of Community Benefits Agreement and regulatory requirements of Community Reinvestment Act.
- Credit Risk Management: Responsible for credit risk management of commercial portfolio during various economic cycles; Deep experience in commercial workouts and restructuring.
- Organizational Transformation: Created and led a team of 25 Community development professionals in eleven states; Working with executive leadership and regional presidents in all markets, created programs that imbedded vertical and geographic accountability to meet needs of local markets and achieve overarching goals for lending and investment. Between 2016 and 2023, Huntington grew $90B and reorganized its go to market operational business model which necessitated agile leadership.
- Strategic Planning: Represented regional banking in ESG, product development, MarCom initiatives.
- HBI Board Engagement: As Director of Economic Inclusion, she met with the HBI board quarterly to report and advise on Huntington’s progress against its commitments.
In 2010, Sharon was appointed by Ohio Governor Strickland to the University of Toledo Board of Trustees, a comprehensive academic institution with a medical school, hospital, and law school and a $1B operating budget. During her 9-year tenure, she served in several leadership roles including Board Chair. Sharon was appointed by three Mayors to Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority Board, which manages seaport, airport, financing, and economic development projects throughout NW Ohio and served as Board Chair.
Sharon graduated from The Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Arts and received her Juris Doctorate Degree from University of Toledo College of Law. Speyer earned her Credit Risk Certification from RMA in 2010.
